March 2006
Bay County Boot Camp - Florida
Kristin Anne Schmidt, the nurse who stood by and watched as guards beat Martin Lee Anderson, may face charges.
A special prosecutor is investigating Martin's death and a complaint against Schmidt has been filed with the Florida Board of Nursing.
According to the Miami Herald, Schmidt has a questionable work history of her own.
From 1984 to 1986, records show Schmidt worked at the Anneewakee Hospital, a treatment center and wilderness camp for about 150 troubled boys in Carrabelle, in the Panhandle. The treatment center was closed in 1986 amid allegations of widespread abuse and molestation of children.
In August 1992, while working at the Rivendell Psychiatric Center in Panama City, state medical regulators charged Schmidt with failing to keep proper records of how she dispensed tranquilizers. Schmidt was reprimanded and fined $250.
Schmidt wouldn't be the first nurse to ignore a child in dire need at a state facility in Florida.
In June 2003, Gaile Tucker Loperfido and Dianne Marie Demeritte, nurses at the Miami-Dade Juvenile Detention Center, did nothing to help 17 year-old Omar Paisley who was suffering from appendicitis.
After 3 tortuous days, Omar died sitting in a chair after his appendix ruptured.
Loperfido and Demeritte are currently awaiting trial.
Thayer Learning Center - Missouri
On March 9, a wrongful death suit against Thayer Learning Center was settled for at least $1 million.
In October 2004, Roberto Reyes of California died after the owners, John and Willa Bundy, and other staff members failed to seek medical attention for the critically ill child.
The coroner blamed a spider bite for Roberto's death.
The 15 year-old had been at Thayer Learning Center less than 2 weeks.
Even though an investigation by Missouri officials showed a pattern of repeated medical neglect at Thayer, the Bundy's have denied any wrongdoing.
The Bundy's are currently suing several former staff members who filed complaints with local authorities.

Bay County Boot Camp - Florida
The body of Martin Lee Anderson was exhumed for a second autopsy this month.
The 14 year-old died following a beating at the Bay County Boot Camp in December.
The coroner who performed the initial autopsy claimed Martin died of sickle cell anemia.
The coroner also claimed Martin had no bruises on his body.
Anyone who saw the brutal beating, which was broadcast on all the major news networks, knew that couldn't be true.
Martin's parents asked Dr. Michael Baden, who had reviewed medical evidence in the slaying of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., to observe the new autopsy.
To the surprise of no one, the second autopsy revealed that Martin did NOT die of sickle cell and DID have bruises.
"My opinion is that he died because of what you see in the videotape," said Dr. Michael Baden.
The investigation will likely take months, but Dr. Baden has indicated that Martin likely suffocated to death.
In the videotaped beating, guards can be seen covering Martin's mouth with their hands and witnesses say they shoved ammonia capsules up the dying boy's nose.
There have been several developments in the case of Martin Lee Anderson this month and only a few are mentioned here. For all the latest info, we recommend searching Google News.
